From Coach Tyler:
Questions are popping up about lacrosse summer camps. If interested, read on...
A few thoughts to pass along from Paul Thomas [Northside Youth Lacrosse (“Surge”) founder], et al:
There are many options for lacrosse camps in GA and outside of GA. And for Goalie's there are several offerings for that specific position. including Bill Pilat's goalie school, etc. There are literally a
ton to choose from, both day camps and overnight camps. The March 2012 issue of Lacrosse magazine was FULL of camp information for the coming summer. Also, summer select club teams have altered the landscape. And there are camps that focus on recruiting (or getting those who want the college look).
In short, look for camps that offer great teachers who spend a lot of time TEACHING (not just former players who look cool and oversee the campers with the help of modestly experienced staff). Mark Millon Camps, Trilogy and the UNC camp (offered at GTech campus, but not to be confused with the GT Camp) do a great job of TEACHING the finer points and then adding in games to the experience. Sorrel Coulson of Breakaway Lacrosse mentioned to look out for LB3 camps as an up-and-coming program overseen now by Brian Silcott (formerly US Lacrosse Men’s Game Director in addition to playing pro after receiving first team All-American honors). And yes, the other camps mentioned are organized by men also with top lacrosse resumes. I don’t know the John Grant, Jr. camp in Marietta, but information on it is below and in attached pdf.
In 2011, I (Tyler) personally attended portions of the UNC camp at GTech and the Trilogy day camp held at Fellowship Christian in Roswell. They were both well run, and if you told me I had to pick between the two I would say go with the UNC camp because of the depth of camp staff/coaches experience level. (That said, I do know that Trilogy is ramping up their camp experience this year.) The only negative at both camps was the July heat which was brutal on turf last year. Trilogy moved their camp into the gym at peak heat index hours. Trilogy has had an overnight camp offering in Dahlonega which, assuming it will be repeated this year, would offer greater exposure to the coaches and the lower temps. Personally I check into any overnight camp environment, lacrosse or otherwise, that I am considering having my sons attend.
I am just scratching the surface with this email. If your son went to a camp (e.g., some of our defensemen were at Oglethorpe last summer), please feel free to speak out regarding the experience.
Attending more than one camp over time is another idea with potential benefits including exposing players to difference teachings. The younger the player the more important it is they simply enjoy the camp experience; “fun precedes learning” when it comes to the younger guys.
Along the lines of teaching and getting better, C2C Lacrosse provides single session, high impact clinics at NAHS field for kids (6th through12th grade). Some of the best players/instructors on the planet are TEACHING at these conveniently located clinics.
